This header is a pastel painting I did in 2009 is of a place in the Netherlands, my country of origin, after a photo shot by Dick Witte.

Some of the painters who have influenced me:
Mondriaan, Hopper
O"Keefe, Weyeth
Singer Sargent
van Gogh, Rembrandt
Picasso, Escher

Since this is my second blog page, it generally takes me longer (sometimes very long) to reply to your comments, but I do read and love them!

YOU AND I -A WINK TO DIEGO RIVERA

 © 16 x 20 Oil, St. Germain
Sold, but available in Print (see sidebar)
You and I is a painting from my early period. For details why I came to to paint this, please read the post on the main blog. For easier reading, I repeat the poem

You and I
Your colors are my country
my home is wherever you will be
you are always around me
your voice and touch
as far as the horizon
I see.
© St.Germain

NOTES
The unspoken bond between parent and child is so strong that it goes beyond countries, it is a global phenomena, symbolized in the rounded horizon.
The house, a symbol of a  place where families live,  also goes beyond borders. In my own family, we have spread out into Indonesia, China, Netherlands, and USA.
For me personally red signifies redemption. It is often the child that brings a redeeming quality n our life. When the child is there, we (the parent) are forced to grow up!
The tree speaks of nurturance and provision to live (fruit).
The simplicity of the minimum style of painting speaks for the child's view. In his or her world, only the parent exists.

Carolyn,
Thanks so much! I love how in your photo the snow accentuates the tree sticks accentuate the incline of the land. Can't promise when I'm going to do this, because I have million projects going, but when I get to it, I'll alert you that it's on my blog (that's why I wanted to ask your permission:) )

I LOVE this one Jeanette. The child I mentioned in one of my previous comments had just come from a Diego Rivera exhibit when we had that conversation about art. This painting of yours is wonderful.

poignant moments...
mothers and children are always such a astounding subjects.
to capture not only what is obvious...but to peel back the layers...that is when the art unfolds...
Wonderful indeed.

Betsy,
Thank you Betsy. With this subject, an artist has to be careful not to lean over to the "sentimental" side, for that would rob the subjects from the power it could have.
Wow, after a visit to Rivera's exhibits there is plenty to talk about!

Muse,
So well said. That is in my opinion the divide between craft and where art unfolds, more than technical skills.

By the way, you are so diversified on the net, that yesterday I came for the first time to your dotcom, and to your daily experiential writings. All very attractive!

This painting indeed has a sweet and somber mood.

Hello dear Jeannette,
Magnificent art, congratulations, I like a lot this theme and your notes about your painting are really interesting.
There always a kind of complicity when the baby looks into mommy's eyes. It's a perfect tune.
Also thanks for your always kind words and for teaching about Madurodam, I will try to learn more about it!:)
Hugs
Léia

Leia,
Thanks so much dear friend! On my main blog I told the story behind this painting, if you like to know it.
Whenever you come in Holland, Madurodam is close to Rotterdam:)

Oh, I love your cute red trailer!

Your description of the picture was very good.
Yes when a Mother sits with her child the world goes away.
As for growing up after having children, I don;t know about that.
I certainly ope this would be the case. lol

A Lady's Life,
Maybe I should have been more clear in my explanation: I meant: when someone becomes a parent, he/she needs to grow up and be there for the child 24/7.

I went to your blog and saw the enormous amounts of visitors you have, yet you only have 27 followers -how did that happen?

Bare eyed Sun,
I caught the wink! You are one of the few who knows Rivera's work. Didn't get to know his work till I lived in California (am from Holland).
